Trump to seek Supreme Court rehearing on birthright citizenship
Published in Political News
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said he would ask the Supreme Court to rehear a case over birthright citizenship, a long-shot bid to undo a ruling that went against his administration.
Trump has assailed the court over last month’s 6-3 ruling, which invalidated an executive order the president issued last year that sought to restrict birthright citizenship to babies with at least one parent who is a US citizen or green-card holder.
The “Supreme Court’s ruling is wrong,” Trump wrote on social media Wednesday. “I will be asking for a Rehearing by the United States Supreme Court, IMMEDIATELY.”
Trump is unlikely to see his request granted. The justices almost never allow such rehearings.
Trump’s order, part of a broader effort to crackdown on immigration, would have affected an estimated 250,000 children born to undocumented immigrants and temporary visitors each year.
