Don Lemon says he 'definitely' could be better president than Trump
Published in Political News
Don Lemon sees no reason he can’t someday be elected to serve as the President of the United States.
The former CNN host told “Pod Save America” host Alex Wagner he’d consider seeking public office — maybe even the nation’s highest office — in the right situation. Lemon said that’s a question he often encounters.
On the downside, the 60-year-old journalist said, he would have reporters and opponents digging into everything he’s said and done in his personal and professional life. Lemon said that might no longer be a dealbreaker for some candidates, but feels that as a Black man, he’d be held to a different standard. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t think about throwing his hat into the political ring.
“Yeah, it could happen, if … the right opportunity presented itself,” he said.
Lemon acknowledged that saying he could be president might raise some eyebrows.
“This is going to be the headline and people are going to laugh about it — ‘I think I could be President of the United States,'” he conceded. “I could definitely run this country better than Donald Trump.”
Trump and Lemon have a long history of criticizing one another. The president called “The Don Lemon Show” podcast host “the dumbest man on television” before he left CNN in 2023. Lemon called Trump the same thing during a Thursday appearance on “The View” that came the morning after Trump gave a nationally televised speech to explain his reasoning for the war in Iran.
Lemon clarified on “Pod Save America” that he’s not at a point in his life where running for office is a serious consideration. But he’s not ruling it out.
“Why can’t I think about running for president?” he asked. “Why can’t I think about running for office?”
The Brooklyn College graduate said he identifies as an independent, but would probably seek office as a Democrat should he change careers.
