Travel on the Trump and Obama highways? South Carolina lawmakers plan interstate honors

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A portion of Interstate 77 in Richland County could be named for former President Barack Obama under a resolution passed in the South Carolina Senate on Wednesday afternoon.
“President Obama’s leadership inspired a generation and broke barriers that once seemed impossible,” said state Sen. Darrell Jackson, D-Richland, in a news release. “Designating this highway in his honor is a meaningful way for South Carolina to recognize his legacy and the impact he has had on our country.” Jackson and state Sen. Tameika Isaac Devine, D-Richland, sponsored the resolution.
The resolution, which passed with no debate or roll call vote, would name the stretch of Interstate 77 between U.S. Highway 1 and Interstate 20 the “President Barack H. Obama Highway.” The state Department of Transportation would also be directed to put up signs recognizing the name.
Just after senators voted for a highway honoring Obama, another resolution unanimously passed to name a not-yet-built Interstate 73 connecting the state to Myrtle Beach after President Donald Trump.
The resolution, which saw more pushback in the House, also did not see any debate or a roll call vote Wednesday. The proposal already cleared the House earlier this month.
The “President Donald J. Trump Highway” would cross Dillon, Horry, Marion and Marlboro counties if it’s built. Trump’s administration permitted the project in 2017, according to the resolution.
“It would be fitting and proper to recognize President Trump’s commitment to making the South Carolina portion of Interstate Highway 73 a reality by naming this segment of highway in his honor,” the resolution reads.
