Trump trashes NFL over Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime show

President Donald Trump is trashing the National Football League for picking superstar Bad Bunny to perform the halftime show at the Super Bowl.

Joining a chorus of right-wing outrage, Trump said he’s never heard of the Puerto Rican mega-hitmaker who is an outspoken critic of his policies on immigration and other issues.

“I don’t know who he is, I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s, like, crazy,” Trump said late Monday night on Newsmax. “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Since Bad Bunny was unveiled as the Super Bowl headliner last week, Trump’s right-wing base has slammed the NFL for what it brands as a “woke” choice because he mostly performs reggaeton and other Puerto Rican genres and sings in Spanish.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene, R-Georgia, said the “perverse unwanted” pick should encourage people to support her push for English to be made the country’s official language.

Some have said the chart-topping artist, whose real name is Benito Ocasio, is an inappropriate choice because he has avoided touring the U.S. mainland over fears of immigration enforcement targeting his fans.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem even asserted only American citizens should attend the Super Bowl and warned Immigration and Customs Enforcement would be out in force to ensure there are no undocumented immigrants at the big game.

“We’ll be all over that place,” Noem said. “I think people should not be coming to the Super Bowl unless they’re law-abiding Americans who love this country.”

She didn’t explain why tourists or foreign citizens who have legal visas should not attend one of the biggest entertainment events of the year.

Bad Bunny recently completed a blockbuster month-long residency in San Juan that boosted his status as a global pop phenomenon and perhaps Puerto Rico’s most significant cultural figure on the world stage.

Reflecting his superstar status, he hosted the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” and riffed in Spanish about his pride about being picked for the high-profile gig.

“If you didn’t understand what I just said,” he quipped, “you have four months to learn.”
