Donald Trump to hold town hall event in Flint next week

DETROIT — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will hold a town hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in Flint, his campaign has announced.
The event will mark the former president's ninth visit to Michigan of the election year and will occur 49 days before the Nov. 5 election, in which Trump, the former president, is competing for votes with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
The town hall will take place at Dort Financial Center and will be moderated by Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, according to Trump's campaign. General admission tickets are available on Trump's campaign website.
"After Michigan voters have been forced to suffer three and a half years of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden’s dangerously liberal policies, President Trump will meet with Michiganders to listen to their concerns and share his vision to make America affordable again," an announcement from the Trump campaign said Thursday.
Flint has suffered from a drinking water crisis that began a decade ago, during Republican former Gov. Rick Snyder's administration, when a state-appointed emergency manager made a cost-cutting decision to source the city's water from the Flint River instead of Detroit's system.
The move was made without the proper corrosion controls, which meant lead from lead fixtures and service lines leached into the drinking water.
The city is located in Genesee County, Michigan's fifth largest county.
In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won Genesee County by about 10 percentage points over Trump, 54%-44%.
But Trump is the only Republican presidential nominee since 1988 to carry Michigan. He won the state against Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 by less than 1 percentage point, 47.5%-47.3%, or about 10,700 votes. But four years later, in 2020, Trump lost to Biden by 3 percentage points statewide, 48%-51%.
Trump last visited Michigan on Aug. 29, when he spoke at Alro Steel in Potterville.
The Democratic vice presidential nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is holding a campaign rally in Grand Rapids Thursday night.
