Editorial: Mamdani's Oct. 7 disgrace and the mayor's Israel mania
Published in Op Eds
Mayor Zohran Mamdani showed himself to be callow and immature by insulting the Jews of New York with his smearing of Israel even when he was memorializing the atrocity of the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack that slaughtered more than 1,000 Israelis.
So deep is Mamdani’s revulsion towards for the state of Israel that even on the mournful anniversary he couldn’t restrain his compulsion to stoke hatred with charges of genocide and war crimes and child killing and the bombing of ambulances and occupation and apartheid.
He published a 211 word statement, and while the first 49 words were appropriate, he didn’t stop there and had to add the lie of genocide and the rest of his familiar litany against the Jewish state. On Twitter, his screed has been viewed more than 20 million times. So classless, but not unexpected.
He should have shown some respect for the dead, just for a day, like he did that same morning at the annual FDNY Memorial Day, where he stood in silence on Riverside Drive as thousands of FDNY members marched by him honoring their fallen.
No, he had to attack Israel with his words.
Did he fear that his anti-Israel friends would see him as a Bibi Netanyahu apologist? Which is exactly what happened Wednesday evening at a solemn vigil for the Oct. 7 dead in Union Square, where he was jeered and booed and heckled and shouted at by his allies with their death to Israel chants that are the norm for Hamas or Hezbollah or the mullahs of Iran. Despite his smiles, Mamdani agrees with them and he can’t countenance the very existence of a sovereign Jewish state.
Note that his Oct. 7 statement doesn’t even mention Jews or terror, just like his antisemitism report from last week doesn’t mention Israel.
The reality is that Israel is the nation-state of the Jews, just like Ireland is for the Irish, Peru is for the Peruvians, Bangladesh is for the Bangladeshis, Kenya is for the Kenyans and down the line for every country on the map. But to Mamdani, there should not be any Jewish state.
Should Netanyahu lose this month’s Israeli elections and a new government come in, Mamdani will continue his stand. It’s not the Netanyahu cabinet he’s against. It’s not what is happening in Gaza or on the West Bank. His problem is with Israel itself. He opposes the very fact of the state.
Thursday at a press conference, he was asked again and again if he would do anything different on his Oct. 7 statement. No, it was all correct, he insisted. He wasn’t big enough to admit error, as this favorite predecessor, the legendary Fiorello LaGuardia said: ”When I make a mistake, it’s a beaut.”
Mamdani took a number of questions. In his answer to Ch 7., he used the word “genocide” twice. To the New York Times’ inquiry he also said genocide. Responding to Ch. 11, he said genocide twice and said it once to Ch. 4’s reporter.
Six times repeating the lie that Israel is conducting a genocide while sticking to his disgraceful statement despite the hurt and anguish it caused. No wonder why Jew-hatred in the city is rising under this mayor.
Mamdani needs to focus on the job he was elected to, not his anti-Israel passions.
