NORFOLK, Va. — President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at Naval Station Norfolk on Sunday afternoon as part of the Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan are also expected to be in attendance, according to a post on Trump’s Truth Social social media site.
The “Titans of the Sea: A Salute to the Fleet” event will kick off with a naval demonstration, including an air show and a flyover, beginning at 1 p.m.. Trump is scheduled to speak around 3 p.m..
About 3,000 sailors in their whites and their guests are expected to gather at the event.
The celebration is occurring against the backdrop of the fourth day of a federal government shutdown, which could cause major economic damage to the Hampton Roads economy if it’s prolonged.
Last week, Trump told the military brass at the Marine Corps base in Quantico that he wanted armed forces to use American cities as training grounds and described using the military to combat “the enemy within.”
