U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin’s district office in Rockville, Maryland, received a suspicious letter on Monday similar to those sent to his Maryland colleagues, the congressman told The Baltimore Sun in a statement Tuesday.

Raskin’s office said it’s “coordinating with Greenbelt law enforcement and federal law enforcement” on this issue. “I’m ever grateful to our law enforcement officers for keeping my extraordinary District Office staff safe,” he said.

Federal authorities are investigating multiple reports of letters containing suspicious substances sent to congressional and election offices across the country. The investigation involves the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and U.S. Capitol Police. Whether Maryland is a part of this investigation remains unclear.

The FBI, USPIS and U.S. Capitol Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Details regarding who sent the letters and their motive are also unclear. But Maryland leaders and election officials allege that the incidents were intended to impede the state’s ability to administer the upcoming midterm elections.

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, who represents Maryland’s 5th Congressional District and received a suspicious letter in his Greenbelt office on Monday, said, “Intimidation efforts such as these are un-American and pose an existential threat to our democracy.”

Other Maryland offices that received suspicious letters include those of U.S. Rep. Sarah Elfreth, U.S. Sens. Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen, and the Maryland State Board of Elections. Law enforcement intercepted letters to the senators and the elections board before they reached their destination. Elfreth’s letter receipt prompted the evacuation of her Columbia office.

U.S. Reps. Andy Harris, Johnny Olszewski Jr. and Kweisi Mfume said their offices didn’t receive any letters. U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey’s office last week didn’t confirm or deny that it received a letter, citing security reasons. U.S. Rep. April McClain Delaney did not immediately respond to requests for comment asking if they’ve received suspicious letters.

Mfume, who serves as ranking member on a subcommittee of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to UPS and USPIS, requesting details on how many letters have been sent to lawmakers and election officials, what steps have been taken in response, particularly to protect postal employees who may have processed or delivered the letters.
