Poland to pay up to $4.4 billion for Fort Trump, report says

The proposed permanent U.S. military base in Poland, dubbed Fort Trump, will cost as much as 17 billion zloty ($4.4 billion) and could open as early as in 2029, according to a report from newspaper Rzeczpospolita.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in New York this week that Poland, a NATO member and a front-line state to Russia’s war on Ukraine, is nearing a deal with the U.S. on deploying a permanent presence of U.S. troops. President Karol Nawrocki told Bloomberg TV that if the two nations finalize the deal, the compound would be called Fort Trump.

Poland’s National Security Bureau said talks with the U.S. administration include a permanently stationed base of about 5,000 soldiers, according to Rzeczpospolita. Earlier, Sikorski said the planned military installation could host about 10,000 troops, compared with about 7,000 rotational U.S. soldiers currently stationed in Poland.

The negotiations come amid broader European concerns that Washington may reduce its military presence on the continent. President Donald Trump has told European allies they need to take greater responsibility for their own security, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is conducting a review of U.S. forces deployed on the other side of the Atlantic.

The exact location of the permanent base will depend on what type of U.S. troops are stationed in Poland, Rzeczpospolita reported. Sites near Wroclaw, Poznan and Szczecin — all cities in western Poland closer to Germany than they are Ukraine — are under consideration, it added.
