If you have always had a dream of living in America, it is your lucky day! Read below to learn the process of becoming a citizen and start living the American dream!

What Is a Citizen?

A citizen is someone who happens to be born in a country or went through the process of becoming a citizen. By law, this person is considered a full member of that country, which entitles them to certain rights, privileges, and protections.

As a citizen, there are specific requests your country will ask of you. For example, you promise to be loyal, obey the laws, and show your allegiance to your country. However, many opportunities come with being a citizen, such as buying a home, starting a business, or voting.

How to Become a Citizen

Now that you know what identifies you as a citizen, you might wonder, what are the citizenship eligibility requirements? Here are four ways to become a citizen:

  • Birthright
  • Acquisition
  • Derivation
  • Naturalization

Birthright is the most common way to become a US citizen. The only requirement is that you are born within the United States or one of its territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, or the Northern Mariana Islands).

Another way for you to become a citizen is through acquisition. If one or both of your parents are US citizens, you can automatically acquire citizenship. Then, you only need to fill out an application for a certificate of citizenship.

You can also become a citizen through derivation. This means that if your parents have become US citizens, you are eligible to apply to become a citizen as well.

And the final way you can become a US citizen is through naturalization. If you are at least eighteen years old, have been a permanent resident for at least five years, or your spouse is a US citizen, and you have been married for three years, you qualify to apply for citizenship.

Start the Application Process

Once you have determined you meet the above citizenship requirements, you are ready to start the application process. However, you do not have to do everything on your own!

Seek out the assistance of an experienced immigration lawyer. They will help you through the process of applying for citizenship, answer any questions you have, and keep you advised regarding the status of your application.
