1. Ask About Pandemic Protocols
The first step is to ask your employer about the work safety protocols that they have in place to protect you and your coworkers during this uncertain time. Ask about their cleaning practices, social distancing rules, and what sort of protective equipment they’re going to provide (hand sanitizer, masks, etc.).
By knowing how your employer plans to move forward, you’ll know if there are any areas in which you need to fill in the gaps.
2. Practice Social Distancing
One of the best ways to stay safe at work is to practice social distancing whenever possible. The CDC recommends maintaining a minimum of six feet of space between yourself and others in addition to wearing a face mask.
This means you might have to stay off crowded elevators and take the stairs instead. And after a few weeks of taking the stairs, you might feel so great that you decide to stop taking the elevator post-pandemic!
3. Sanitize Your Workspace
Even if your employer has heightened cleaning protocols for your office to help bolster workplace safety, it’s always a good idea to sanitize your own workspace periodically throughout the day.
Keep both hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies at your desk and avoid touching other surfaces when you can. If you do touch another surface, such as handrails or office supplies from someone else’s desk, wash your hands as soon as possible.
4. Stay Out of Break Areas
Break areas a great way to take a breather from your workday and bond with your coworkers. However, with so many people coming in and out throughout the day, they’re also a breeding ground for bacteria.
Because of this, it’s wise to be wary of these areas for the time being. Rather than going to the break room, consider getting some fresh air by taking a walk around the block. You’ll give your mental and physical health a boost while avoiding a potential danger zone.
5. Be Open With Your Coworkers
As long as you’re not pushy or rude, there’s nothing wrong with being open with your coworkers about your concerns. Point out when they’re doing something that might be unsafe, such as touching their face, and invite them to do the same for you.
The goal is to create a team environment in which everyone works together to keep themselves and each other safe and healthy.
