Instantly recognizable and, for some, a sex symbol, the versatile performer seems to bring amazing performances for deep within – does a green plant help with it? When you start talking to celebrities, there is always one person every brings up all the time and always someone says he is there “Hall Pass“. He is is known for his unusual charm, distinctive delivery and goofiness. Staring in memorable roles in movies like Jurassic Park, The Fly and Independence Day he also has a passion for jazz piano. His personality makes even an ordinary interview entertaining. But does Jeff Goldblum consume weed?
The answer is yes, he has tried cannabis, and he has been surprisingly open about it. The actor has talked about smoking hash and marijuana when he was young, as well as experimenting with a cannabis edible later in life. These days, however, Goldblum says he prefers to rely on his own imagination rather than outside enhancements. Goldblum’s introduction to cannabis was a family affair, although not quite the sort most parents would plan.
In a 2019 interview with VICE, the actor recalled his mother had tried smoking marijuana and even grew it in the family’s backyard in Pittsburgh. His older brother, who was already exploring the counterculture, introduced him to hash.
Goldblum remembered visiting his brother’s apartment, where they smoked hash from a pipe while listening to the Beatles. He described the experience enthusiastically, recalling the music and the excitement surrounding this unfamiliar world.
After moving to New York at 17 to pursue acting, Goldblum continued experimenting with marijuana occasionally. He was studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse, building the foundation for a career which would eventually include The Fly, Independence Day and the blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise.
In a 2018 interview with NME, Goldblum also discussed experimenting with other substances during his early years. He said he tried mescaline and LSD in 1971, describing the period as the end of his experimentation with hallucinogens.
Goldblum discussed trying a small piece of a cannabis-infused chocolate in his 2018 NME interview.
He described himself as particularly sensitive to marijuana’s effects and said he didn’t especially enjoy the experience. His comments offered a different perspective from the familiar Hollywood image of cannabis as a reliable way to relax or spark creativity.
Goldblum has also talked about moving away from using substances as performance enhancers. Earlier in his career, he sometimes drank alcohol before acting performances to calm his nerves. He eventually decided the approach was counterproductive.
Coffee became another habit he later abandoned. By the time of his 2019 VICE interview, Goldblum said he preferred to prepare for work through sleep, breakfast and his own imagination. Goldblum’s approach to creativity may be the most revealing part of his cannabis story.
The actor has built a career around performances which feel spontaneous, unusual and unmistakably his own. He has also developed a parallel career as a jazz pianist, performing with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.
Rather than crediting drugs with fueling his creativity, Goldblum has described a preference for showing up rested and ready to tackle the challenge in front of him.
In his VICE interview, he explained he no longer relied on substances to enhance his work. His formula was considerably more ordinary: a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast and the ability to focus on the task at hand.
This doesn’t mean Goldblum isn’t open to cannabis down the road. It does mean his own public comments point toward a more cautious relationship with marijuana than his youthful experimentation might suggest.
And for a performer whose on-screen energy and offbeat charm have become part of his signature, Goldblum seems content to let his imagination do the heavy lifting.
