NEW YORK — Josh Johnson’s “Symphony” took over a SoHo sidewalk Tuesday with a sidewalk sensation for the eyes and ears that proved almost as hot as the scorching Tri-state temperatures.

The 36-year-old “Daily Show” star writer and star — making his HBO comedy special debut Friday with “Josh Johnson: Symphony” — hosted Tuesday’s lunchtime experience at the corner of streets Grand and Wooster, where he offered fans “something a little different.”

The goal of the pop-up was to “create a Symphony together as the sidewalk becomes our orchestra on a larger-than-life street piano,” the four-time Emmy nominee alerted his 2.4 million Instagram followers Monday.

Johnson played conductor as he quenched attendees’ thirst for a good time, leading them as they pitter-pattered and danced atop a massive piano, mercifully shrouded in the shade. The assignment was more in the vein of “let’s all step on the keys,” which resulted more in discordant, unorganized noise than discernible tunes.

Still, the charming experience evoked the beloved scene in which Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia conjure the tune of “Heart and Soul” on F.A.O. Schwarz’s giant piano keys in 1988’s “Big.”

It certainly seemed to strike a chord with the roughly 75 New Yorkers who beamed from ear to ear as their feet made music, despite the 90-degree heat, eased by Johnson’s bubbly nature as well as the free ice cream from the truck hired for the occasion.

The former “Tonight Show” writer, who made sure to pose for selfies with fans, has multiple comedy specials under his belt, from Comedy Central’s “Trevor Noah Presents Josh Johnson: # (Hashtag)” in 2021 to Peacock’s “Up Here Killing Myself” in 2023. This week marks his first for HBO.

“Josh Johnson: Symphony” premieres May 22 on HBO Max.

The special has already garnered a rave five-star review from The Guardian, which hailed the “masterful” work as “a giant leap forward for a rapidly ascending star.”
