Ever wonder why Bruno Mars songs sound so familiar? It’s partly because he’s influenced by some of the best artists from the past.

Call it homage. Derivative. Or borrowing.

It’s one of the many reasons Mars has a multi-generational appeal. The entertainer, who started in showbiz impersonating Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, digs James Brown, Prince and the Police, and so do many of his older fans. Younger fans might not be aware of the influences.

Here are seven Mars songs and who they hark back to.

‘Locked Out of Heaven’ (2012)

That reggae rhythm, sunny vibe and high-pitched yelps scream Sting and the Police.

‘Treasure’ (2013)

This breezy pop-soul recalls early Michael Jackson. Think “Rock With You.”

‘Uptown Funk’ (2014)

It features a Minneapolis Sound groove and Morris Day attitude reminiscent of the Time and a horn line evoking vintage Kool & the Gang.

‘Perm’ (2016)

This feels like an unmistakable homage to the godfather of soul, the eternally funky James Brown.

‘That’s What I Like’ (2017)

This sounds like a mashup of Prince and New Edition.

‘Leave the Door Open’ (2021)

This lush Silk Sonic track channels the smooth ’70s soul of such classic vocal groups as the Spinners, the Stylistics and the Delfonics.

‘I Just Might’ (2026)

This upbeat pop stroll evokes two ’70s oldies — “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” by Leo Sayer and “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone.
