Upping your risk for prostate cancer with every bite

By Michael Roizen, M.D. on

This year in the U.S., there will be more than 333,000 new cases of prostate cancer and more than 36,000 men will die from the disease. It's not a young man's problem; the average age at which guys are diagnosed is 67 -- many of them after a lifetime of eating ultra-processed foods.

That's the finding of a new study published in the American Journal of Medicine. Researchers looked at data on more than 17,000 men who were in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and found that those who said they ate more ultra-processed foods, including soft drinks, packaged snacks, cereals, and processed meats, had a 24% to 31% increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

So, here's one more compelling reason to avoid highly processed foods that are loaded with saturated and trans fats, oils, added sugars and additives that falsely amp up flavor, texture -- and shelf life. And remember: They also erase food's nutritional value and increase your risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, colon cancer, gastro woes, dementia and depression, in addition to prostate cancer.

Luckily, it's never too late to escape the pain and disability that highly processed foods can cause you and to discover tasty, healthful foods that will extend your healthy lifespan and make your ActualAge younger.
