Are you battling fatigue?
Fatigue -- that feeling of mental or physical exhaustion that doesn't go away with sleep or rest -- is epidemic in the U.S., according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. A survey of 27, 000 folks age 18 and older reveals that 70% of you feel fatigue in a day; 20% of you feel fatigued all day; 35% say most of the day; and 45% say some of the day. Seems like almost no one escapes debilitating fatigue!
Fatigue develops because of lifestyle choices, lack of hydration, mental distress and stress, and physical health challenges, such as heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, anemia, thyroid issues and obesity. And when fatigue persists (as it seems to for most folks), it can triple your risk for depression and double the likelihood of cognition problems and anxiety.
How do you beat persistent fatigue? Numero uno: drink more water. Next, practice stress management using exercise, meditation, interaction with your posse and committing time to doing something you enjoy and that you feel matters to you or the world. Also, talk to your doc about getting a full check-up so you can address physical problems that limit activity, identify nutritional deficiencies, and work on achieving a healthy weight if you're overweight. Practicing smart sleep habits and eating only complex carbs can also help.
