Serious risks from Type 2 diabetes can be reduced or avoided

By Michael Roizen, M.D. on

Don't freak out: Two new studies reveal additional health risks that accompany a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes (T2D). First, a study released at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes found that the incidence of cancer is 12% higher among men and 22% higher among women with T2D than in folks without T2D.

Another study presented at that conference found that as many as 33% of people with T2D develop serious heart or kidney disease within five years of diagnosis. All this is on top of the vision, cognitive, and nerve disorders that are related to T2D.

The good news? If your annual check-up reveals you have pre-diabetes, you have an almost 60% chance of reversing it and dodging diabetes. How? With weight loss, exercise, a healthy plant-based diet, stress reduction and a good sleep routine. And if you take a GLP-1 (off-label with your doc's Rx) along with improved lifestyle habits, you have an even more powerful way to reverse prediabetes and decrease cancer risks, kidney disease, and brain and nerve deficiencies.

But what if you have full-blown T2D? Studies indicate -- and patients can verify -- that bariatric surgery, low-calorie diets, and/or processed carbohydrate restriction are effective. A Yale study found that losing and keeping off 10% of body weight can banish insulin resistance and reverse T2D. Here again, GLP-1s are a strong tool for reversal of insulin resistance, as well as dodging heart disease, fatty liver, obesity-associated cancers, and Alzheimer's disease. Want more help?
