The power of pets
I often talk about how loneliness and isolation damage health, increasing everything from heart woes to depression, sedentary behavior and dementia. And you've heard how the trio of posse, purpose and passion can break the downward spiral that loneliness and isolation can cause. But a human posse, while vital, isn't the only posse that can fuel connection, purpose and passion!
Survey results published as "Better Together" from the Mather Institute provide insights into how having a pet can reshape physical, emotional and social well-being. Interviews with folks age 55 and older who live alone revealed that 82% feel their pet provides emotional support, 73% say their pet provides a greater sense of purpose, and another 73% say their pets sometimes, often or always leads to social interactions.
Dogs are especially effective. Dog owners get 42% more physical activity than non-dog owners and 39% more than cat owners. And dog owners, ages 55 to 64, say they're less depressed than cat owners.
I'm not saying a cat, turtle or rabbit can't boost your mood, provide companionship and fuel a sense of purpose. But the physical activity and social interaction with other dog owners you can get from having a dog provides an extra boost to your well-being.
So, if you're feeling isolated/lonely, consider getting a pet of some kind -- and if physical activity and social interaction don't result from that, check out my upcoming book "YOU: Getting Older: The Owner's Manual for Your Golden Years," and my podcast, "The New Science of Longevity," at walkerdunlop.com/webcast/episodes/michael-roizen.
