Complete remission of Type 2 diabetes for folks 45 and younger

By Michael Roizen, M.D. on

The 2020 National Diabetes Statistics Report found that around 5 million Americans had Type 2 diabetes -- and 24% of them were ages 18 to 64. That means that, at a young age, they were at an increased risk of vision and nerve problems, gastro disturbances, cardiovascular traumas, and dementia. But if that's you, don't despair.

A study out of the U.K. and Canada, published in The Lancet, found that if you get Type 2 diabetes before age 45, you can push the disease into sustained remission with a rigorous weight-loss and fitness routine. At week 24 of the program, 54% of participants saw complete remission. Only 4% of the folks in the control group overcame their Type 2 diabetes.

What did it take? The diet totals 800-900 calories per day; 30% protein, 50% carbohydrate and 20% fat. For the first two weeks, you eat total meal replacements. For weeks 3-12, you combine meal replacements with one food-based meal a day. Weeks 13-24 are a bit looser, offering a "weight-maintenance" diet. The physical activity combines 2x-weekly aerobic and resistance programs for 12 weeks, and independent workouts for weeks 13-24.

The takeaway? Low-energy diets along with structured exercise routines help you get rid of microfat in cells that causes insulin resistance, shed pounds, improve fitness and, for many folks, produce remission. And even if you're not younger than 45 or you don't achieve complete remission, this approach to jump-starting a younger and longer life may create major improvements -- ask your doctor about it.
