You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: Will Amazon Prime Video have a second season of “On Call”?

A: No. The police drama, which I liked quite a bit, was canceled in May 2025 despite a good following for its eight episodes. According to Deadline.com, Amazon was ready to renew the show for two more seasons – but only if the show reduced the premium it charged Amazon. Such demands are not uncommon these days, Deadline said, because the economics of TV shows are tough. "For (“On Call” companies) Wolf Entertainment and Universal TV, reducing a premium that was not big to begin with was not economically feasible, so the status of ‘On Call’ at Amazon went from a pending two-season renewal to cancellation within the span of weeks.” The show could have gone to another programmer, but at this writing I have not seen news of any deal.

Q: On HGTV shows where they are selling/buying/remodeling homes, WHY is the master/main/primary bathroom referred to as an ensuite? Are we in France???

A: We’re not in France, but we have blended French words and phrases into our English (like connoisseur, haute couture, faux pas, carte blanche). Ensuite — sometimes en suite, sometimes hyphenated — means “in sequence” or “following,” says House Beautiful, or “a connected space,” according to Better Homes and Gardens. BHG says the term is used to describe “a bathroom that can only be accessed from within the bedroom. There is no door to the hallway. This limited access makes this bathroom feel like a private retreat.” And when you’re trying to make a house more appealing, it sounds nicer than “bedroom with toilet."

Q: I need your help to identify a movie about a married older woman who loved to sing but had a terrible voice! Because she was wealthy, people in her social circle encouraged her “talents” to the point that she gave a public concert which turned out to be humiliating. Does this sound familiar? I’d like to watch it again.

A: It sounds as if you saw “Florence Foster Jenkins,” a 2016 movie inspired by the real-life Jenkins, a socialite once called “the world’s worst opera singer.” Meryl Streep played the title role, fully committing to the awful singing required. The movie is on DVD and Blu-ray and available for download and streaming, including for free on Hoopla. You can also find recordings of the real Jenkins.

Q: As a child many decades ago I watched a Western starring Kirk Douglas. I assume the movie was made in the 1950s and it was filmed in black and white. Kirk punches a policeman so he can speak to his brother in jail. Then he breaks out of jail and attempts to evade the police. What is its name?

A: That would be “Lonely Are the Brave,” from 1962. Called “an elegy to the Western” with Douglas as a cowboy struggling with changes in the modern world. (By the way, he gets sent to jail to help break out a friend, not his brother.) Gena Rowlands and Walter Matthau also starred. Dalton Trumbo wrote the script.
