NEW YORK — “& Juliet,” the musical exploring the life Shakespeare’s Juliet would have lived if she hadn’t offed herself to join Romeo in death will close in January after four years on Broadway.

Juliet’s musical adventures are set to end their run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Jan. 3, 2027, after logging 1,723 regular performances and 20 preview performances, the producers announced Thursday. It opened on Nov. 17, 2022, after a tepid London debut that was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, and went on to smash stereotypes and break box office records.

“& Juliet” was the first new musical of the 2022-23 season to recoup its investment and is currently the last one remaining of the shows that opened that season. It has grossed more than $175 million, the producers said in a statement.

“From the very beginning, ‘& Juliet’ has been winning over audiences and critics alike, shattering every stereotype about jukebox musicals to deliver a smart, funny, heartfelt story — all while sparking true joy in everyone who sees it,” producers Theresa Steele Page and Eva Price said in a joint statement Thursday announcing the final date. “We’re incredibly proud of the run we’ve had on Broadway, and the story of inclusion, acceptance and second chances we’ve been able to share with more than 1.5 million people in our four years on Broadway.”

The jukebox musical weaves the hits of pop hitmaker Max Martin into a fanciful, upbeat take on the star-crossed lovers’ tragic tale that picks up near the end of the play penned by William Shakespeare in the late 1500s. Juliet, rather than stab herself with her lover’s dagger, “decides losing Romeo doesn’t mean she should die,” as the show’s writeup puts it.

Off to Paris she goes, along with a posse of new and original characters who accompany her on the party circuit as she makes new friends, finds fresh love and revels in living a life unconfined. Martin wrote or co-wrote all 30 songs, which include “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” and “I Want It That Way.”

Since its Broadway opening, “& Juliet” has toured 73 cities in the U.S. in 34 states, as well as playing in nine countries on four continents, the producers’ statement said. Its upbeat ending has seen more than four tons of confetti — 8,447 pounds, to be exact — dumped onto Sondheim Theatre audiences. It has both launched numerous stars and attracted celebrity talent galore.
