Mark Hamill has joked the reason he was absent from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's star-studded wedding was simply because he "wasn't invited".

Sharing a tongue-in-cheek message to congratulate the newlyweds after their high-profile celebration, the Star Wars actor, 74, posted the message on Instagram following the wedding of Taylor Swift, 36, and Travis Kelce, also 36, at Madison Square Garden on Friday, 3 July.

According to PEOPLE, around 1,000 guests attended the ceremony, with the venue transformed into what one source described as "looked like a forest", featuring ferns, trees and rows of white-covered seating.

The wedding comes as Taylor continues the next chapter of her career following the record-breaking Eras Tour and ongoing attention surrounding her relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. Mark, meanwhile, remains synonymous with his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, a role that has defined his career for decades alongside his extensive voice acting work.

Sharing a photograph of the couple, Mark wrote on Instagram: "Congratulations to the newlyweds."

He continued: "I declined to attend the wedding for a variety of personal reasons, but mainly because I wasn't invited."

According to PEOPLE, the wedding ceremony featured a guest list that included Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Andrew Scott, Jennifer Lopez and Bradley Cooper.

A source told PEOPLE the wedding venue had been transformed into a woodland-inspired setting that "looked like a forest", with white chair covers surrounded by ferns and trees.

Taylor and Travis wore wedding outfits created by Christian Dior Haute Couture under the direction of creative director Jonathan Anderson, together with custom Christian Louboutin shoes.

Rather than appointing traditional bridesmaids or groomsmen, Taylor's brother, Austin Swift, served as her man of honour, while Travis's brother, Jason Kelce, was his best man.

The ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler.

Mark was not the only celebrity to joke publicly about missing the celebrations.

Amy Schumer shared a still from her comedy series Life and Beth, showing herself marrying Michael Cera, before referencing the wedding on Instagram.

She wrote: "Okay so why weren't we allowed in?"

Away from the wedding humour, Mark and his wife, Marilou Hamill, have been married since December 1978.

Speaking to PEOPLE last August about the secret to their long marriage, Marilou said: "And also, go in knowing you're not going to change anyone. So you have to accept their quirks and their behavior."

Mark added: "I just think that when you find the right one, the odds are against you. But if you do get lucky, you just have to hang on and be grateful that you were able to find that one."
