SAN DIEGO — Rod Stewart has issued an apology after his Friday night San Diego concert at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre was abruptly canceled just 40 minutes before its scheduled 7:30 p.m. start time. The 81-year-old vocal legend has also expressed hope that his show here — part of his “One Last Time” farewell tour — can be rescheduled.

In a statement issued Friday night by Live Nation, the show’s producer, Stewart’s sinus infection was cited as the reason for the last-minute cancellation. But in a separate statement issued later Friday evening, Stewart’s representatives said his condition was more serious than that.

“He traveled to the venue and made every effort to perform,” the statement read. “But on the advice of his doctors and following a diagnosis of an acute upper respiratory infection that has resulted in laryngitis, he is unable to take to the stage this evening.”

Stewart subsequently issued a statement of his own on social media. It included a photo of him on the stage in the empty North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, which has a capacity of nearly 20,000 and is located in Chula Vista, near the U.S.-Mexican border.

“Well, here I am in beautiful Chula Vista as the stage is being taken down around me,” he wrote. “Following treatment, I’m feeling much better, but my voice is not. I’m very disappointed and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to my fans.

“I did everything I could to make the show happen tonight, but unfortunately it just wasn’t possible. I will do my utmost to reschedule.”

If Stewart does reschedule, fans who were turned away at the door on Friday will have to buy their tickets anew.

Live Nation’s announcement Friday night that Stewart’s concert had been canceled made no mention of a new date or of tickets for the canceled show being valid for a future Stewart concert here.

Instead, Live Nation’s announcement stated: “Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster will be refunded automatically, according to the statement. Concertgoers who bought their tickets from a third-party reseller, such as StubHub, SeatGeek or VividSeats will need to seek refunds from their point of purchase.”

Stewart also canceled his May 29 and May 30 performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, citing a sinus infection. Neither of those shows have been rescheduled as yet.

Stewart’s next scheduled concert is Monday, June 15, at the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Colorado.
