NEW YORK — Jimmy Kimmel is welcoming Stephen Colbert back to late-night television next week before making a return of his own later in the month.

Fresh off his annual summer break, Kimmel said on Thursday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that Colbert will soon be his special guest.

“We will be back in a very big way on Tuesday night, after the Emmys with the one and only Stephen Colbert, who will be making his return to late-night television,” Kimmel said toward the close of the show.

Colbert ended 11 years of broadcasting “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS in May. Kimmel immediately offered support to his fellow comic when the cancellation occurred by posting a “F–k you” message to his counterpart’s former network.

Kimmel told Variety in a July interview that he asked Colbert to host his ABC show while he was off for the summer, but Colbert declined. Instead, entertainers including Rosie O’Donnell, Jelly Roll, Ike Barinholtz and Tiffany Haddish filled in while he was away.

Kimmel — a Brooklyn native — will be hosting a comeback of his own when he brings his late-night program to the Brooklyn Academy of Music at the end of the month. Guests for that week of shows haven’t been announced.

He’s hosted his “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for more than 23 years. Reports surfaced last week that the show would end after its current contract runs out next May. ABC was quick to shoot down that rumor.

“Any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative,” an ABC Entertainment spokesperson told Us Weekly.
