Cher recalls shock reaction to 'naked' 1974 Met Gala dress before it became a trend

Cher joked she "upset" people with her "naked" Met Gala dress 52 years ago but now it's become a trend.
The Believe hitmaker stepped out at the star studded fashion event in New York City for the first time in a decade on Monday (05.04.26), and she paid tribute to her very first Met Gala look from 1974, when she appeared in a sheer gown by Bob Mackie.
Speaking to La La Anthony on Vogue magazine's Met Gala live stream, she quipped: "At the first Met Gala I was naked, and so people were upset about it.
"But now people wouldn't even give it a thought... But I was real skinny so there was nothing really showing.
"Well, that's not exactly true, but it wasn't much!"
Despite the backlash over her original gown, Cher is delighted to see so many celebrities embracing similarly bold fashion choices.
She added: "I love to see people expressing themselves, and it gives me ideas and encouragement about the generations that are coming up."
Her Burberry outfit for this year's event has a nod to the 1974 gown for this year's Costume Art theme.
The gown, which was created by Burberry's Daniel Lee and Cher's stylist Patti Wilson, featured a black silk-tulle twisted dress, and the ensemble was completed by a leather corset, and a crystal-embellished cropped leather jacket.
The 1974 dress sparked controversy from some of the media and public, and last year Mackie recalled the reaction at the Met Gala.
The designer told Interview: "The place went crazy. I've never seen so many photographers just come out of the shadows at the Met and take her picture.
"And of course she was in every newspaper the next day, and they've been printing it in the last 50 years, over and over again.
"But it was just amazing. People were horrified, they thought, that's not fashion, she's just naked at the Metropolitan."
Mackie previously revealed how he has always taken the time to get to know his celebrity clients properly so he could make them the perfect outfit - and pretty much all of them were well-behaved.
Back in 2024, he told WWD: "They just become part of my family. People say, 'Oh, well, didn't you have trouble with any of them?' and I say, 'Hardly any - I really had the best people working with me. They liked what I did and I loved what they did.
"When you dress somebody, you've really got to know them inside and out especially if they're performers. You have to know what's good for them and how to make them look the best. Also, having a knowledge of their talents helps."
