King Charles and Queen Camilla are pressing on with their Washington D.C. trip, even after the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump.

The decision follows a rapid round of overnight security briefings in Washington and London following the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday (25.04.26), where both governments reviewed the four‑day programme and agreed to tighten certain elements.

According to senior royal sources, two engagements are expected to be reshaped to reflect the heightened security environment, though the overall itinerary remains intact. Palace insiders say the King and Queen, who are expected to travel to the US on Monday (27.04.26), are "looking forward" to the visit and intend to continue with the diplomatic mission while allowing security teams to make any necessary changes.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the confirmation came after a full day of cross‑Atlantic discussions and government advice, adding that the royal couple were grateful for the swift work carried out to keep the visit on track.

They told several outlets: "Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned. The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow."

Sir Christian Turner, the UK's Ambassador to the US, said British and American officials had been working "around the clock" since the shooting at the Washington Hilton.

He praised the US Secret Service for its response and said both nations' security teams had been coordinating for weeks in preparation for the visit.

He confirmed that the King and Queen had privately reached out to President Trump and the First Lady following the incident, and stressed that both sides were confident in the updated safety measures now in place.

With the operational tweaks agreed, officials say the focus has shifted back to the diplomatic agenda -- and ensuring the State Visit begins smoothly when the royal couple arrive in Washington tomorrow.

Despite the shooting, Trump is confident that the King and Queen will still travel to the US.

Speaking to Fox, he said: "He's coming, and we're going to have a great time.

"He's really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative."
