Dr. Dre finally lands on Forbes' annual billionaires list
Published in Entertainment News
NEW YORK — Dr. Dre has officially cleared billionaire status for Forbes, over a decade after he dubbed himself himself “hip-hop’s first.”
The 61-year-old star producer, born André Young, is a newcomer to the net worth bracket with a solid $1 billion, according to Forbes’ Richest People In The World list.
The seven-time Grammy winner ranks No. 3,332 on the list that also includes the likes of Rihanna, Turkish business magnate Aydin Dogan, former SoFI CEO Michael Cagney and many others.
In the wake of Apple buying Beats by Dre electronics brand for $3 billion in 2014, Dre dubbed himself “the first billionaire in hip-hop.”
Forbes at the time said the deal likely would have upped Dre’s estimated net worth from $550 million to $800 million. Sean “Diddy” Combs — now serving time for transportation for prostitution — was at the time hip-hop’s richest, with $700 million.
However, Jay-Z, was ultimately crowned the genre’s first billionaire in 2019. As of the latest ranking, his net worth is at $2.8 billion.
