Television Q&A: Has future of CBS show 'Watson' been deduced?
Published in Entertainment News
You have questions. I have some answers.
Q: I am wondering if you have heard anything about the CBS show "Watson" being renewed for next year. My son and I enjoyed the twist and turns of the series.
A: Back in February, I said there were “ominous signs” around the show’s chances of another season, including low ratings, CBS’s renewing many other shows while holding off on the Morris Chestnut medical drama, and a crowded slate of shows vying for spots next season. So it is no surprise that in late March “Watson” was canceled. The series finale has been set for May 3.
Q: With the Timothy Busfield accusations, did they cancel “The Cleaning Lady”?
A: I can’t directly connect Busfield and the cancellation. When “The Cleaning Lady” was canceled in June 2025 after four seasons, one report noted that the series had faced a huge creative problem: the death from cancer of Adan Canto, who played a major character on the show, while the show was working on its third season. The series struggled with its storytelling after Canto’s passing, and ratings declined to a cancellation level in the fourth season.
Actor-director Busfield (“Thirtysomething,” “The West Wing”) was not arrested until January of this year based on claims he “engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with 11-year-old twin boys” while directing “The Cleaning Lady,” as People.com reported it. Busfield has pleaded not guilty and called the accusations “lies.”
Q: Was the Hulu series “Little Fires Everywhere” ever released on DVD?
A: As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, in this streaming age some titles do not make it to DVD, and “Little Fires Everywhere” appears to be one of those. The 2020 drama starring Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon has been popular on Hulu — so popular, I suspect, the streaming service did not want to dilute its appeal with a release on disc. There’s not an authorized DVD, although some sites are selling “FYC” discs — that is, “for your consideration” releases originally sent by studios to potential voters for TV awards.
Q: Will “The Night Agent” be returning?
A: Yes. Netflix has ordered a fourth season of the thriller, with a new location: Los Angeles. (Previous seasons were based in Canada and New York.) Series creator Shawn Ryan promises “more twists, turns and thrills” in the new location, but another factor is financial. Deadline.com reported that “The Night Agent” received a $31.6 million tax credit in California in exchange for relocating.
