Reprogramming your immune cells
I attended the Global Wellness Summit in Dubai (my 13th consecutive, I think), which focused on transformative technologies that are making wellness for an extended lifetime more attainable. The use of stem cells, genome editing and AI is paving the way for not just treating diseases but curing them. For example, San Francisco's Gladstone Institute is working on using the new technologies to reprogram immune cells, induce new heart muscle cells and edit out genes that increase the risk for or cause Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, heart failure, Type 1 diabetes, and macular degeneration.
Two studies reflect this new understanding of how reprogramming stem cells is going to change your wellness trajectory. One, published in Nature, shows how targeting the brain's immune cells could restore Alzheimer's-related lipid imbalance, which causes the formation of cognition-altering fat granules. The other, in Advanced Science, says that depression isn't just a disease of the mind, but is related to the immune-brain connection -- and reprogramming immune cells may "reprogram" the mind.
You can also change how your immune cells are operating -- by tamping down chronic inflammation and making sure you're not deficient in essential nutrients. Stress management is also important -- so meditate, adopt a healthy sleep routine, build a posse and find a purpose. And physical activity helps keep the immune system doing its job, as does not smoking and moderate or no alcohol consumption.
