MINNEAPOLIS — Everyone who wasn’t allowed a bathroom break while “Saturday Night Live” weekend anchor Michael Che was taping his Netflix special at First Avenue is about to find out if their sacrifice makes for good TV.

“Shot in Minnesota,” the comedian’s third stand-up special on the streaming service, premieres on Oct. 13. Che has been a frequent visitor to Minneapolis, and during the taping called post-Operation Metro Surge Minneapolis the new center of the civil rights movement.

Promotional material for the show focused on Che’s lingering disbelief that his Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost married one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.

“You know what really bothers me about Colin being married to Scarlett Johansson?” Che said in the official Netflix trailer. “It’s that he acts like it’s normal. ... He acts like it’s not a miracle.”

The Star Tribune’s Neal Justin was in the small audience at First Avenue in August during the first of four shows recorded to make the special — under the stern eye of crew tasked with keeping the audience from moving around or sneaking off to the bathroom while cameras were rolling.

“For the most part,” Justin reported, “the Netflix team didn’t have anything to worry about. Che made it easy to sit still.”

Some of Che’s biggest laughs of the night, Justin said, came after he urged the audience not to be so timid about using slurs like the r-word. In Justin’s words:

“This is why I wanted to do this show here,” Che said after getting big laughs during the bit. “Minneapolis is the center of the fight. This is like the new Selma.”
