Jamie Oliver wants his children to realise "how lucky they are" to have him as a dad.

The 51-year-old celebrity chef, who has kids Poppy, 24, Daisy 23, Petal, 17, Buddy, 16, and 10-year-old River with wife Jools, has admitted his family aren't that impressed with his fame or culinary skills.

He told Closer magazine: "They're so unimpressed by me. I keep telling them how lucky they are and how cool their dad is, but they don't react. [laughs]

"I want them to be more grateful and in awe of their father, but I'm just their dad."

To the rest of the world, Jamie rose to fame with his The Naked Chef series in 1999, and he's gone onto cook meals for everyone from Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey to Robert De Niro and Jennifer Aniston.

Despite that, his children can be some of the toughest to please when he's trying out his signature dishes at home.

He said: "I typically always try the recipes at home first so my kids and my family are my guinea pigs.

"But, I have to say, they're quite a tough audience. They really don't know how lucky they are."

His kids have all reached an age where they are enjoying exploring foods from "different countries", including "flavours from Asia", and dishes like pasta and noodles.

Jamie added: "They want proteins with crunch and attitude so they're getting into textures.

"But I definitely don't feel like whatever you think Jamie Oliver is. I'm like, 'Kids, do you not realise people queue up to have this? Are you kidding me?'"

The whole family was celebrating last month, after Jamie's eldest daughter Poppy announced her engagement to her long-term partner Ben.

Following a beach proposal at sunset, the television chef's wife Jools Oliver, also 51, shared the news on Instagram, revealing the couple had become engaged after five years together.

Sharing a video of the proposal on Instagram, Jools wrote: "Probably one of my favourite reels so far. Our first baby Poppy Honey is getting married.

"We are so excited, proud and happy. Ben we all adore you. Little did I know as we moved Pop in to her second house at university, whilst I was sweating over your shoe rack flat pack you seemed very distracted with the boy who had just moved in next door...

"5 years later you had met you soul mate. so excited for the next chapter love you xxx @bennewman___ @katenewman."

The video showed Ben getting down on one knee on a beach at sunset before Poppy accepted the proposal.

The couple met while studying at university after Ben moved into the neighbouring property during Poppy's second year.

Following graduation, they travelled around Australia together before returning to the UK.

Jamie also marked the occasion on his Instagram Stories, writing: "Happy engagement my baby girl Poppy and Ben. I'm so please for you both. What a wonderful moment."
