NEW YORK — Lena Dunham and her husband, musician Luis Felber, have welcomed their first child together.

Dunham announced the birth of her daughter, who was born via surrogate, in an essay published in Vogue on Wednesday.

“While I’ve been known to make friends quickly — airport terminals, veterinary offices — this was the quickest leap from first coffee to gynecological procedure I’d ever done,” she wrote. “And in that moment, as we watched the ball of cells our doctor had already told us could someday form a girl shooting across the dark ultrasound screen like a UFO on a mission, I had the overwhelming urge to tell her I loved her.”

Dunham recalled the moment the embryo was transferred into her surrogate, and how it felt almost anticlimactic, like “a child’s strep test and infinitely less dramatic.” Then, just five days later, she received a photo of a positive pregnancy test, marking the official start of her journey to motherhood. The “Girls” star has previously been open about her health struggles and the likely impact they’d have on her desire to become a parent.

In 2018, she underwent a hysterectomy in a bid to mitigate symptoms from endometriosis. Then, just months later, she had her left ovary removed as well.

In her essay, Dunham also reflected on the day of her daughter’s birth, admitting that while it occurred to her that she may come early, she did not expect for the due date to come and go with no baby to hold at the end of it.

“And then, 13 days late, in the face of a solar eclipse and a meteor shower, she announced herself,” Dunham wrote. “I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all.”

She then recalled saying to her newborn: “I’m your mama. You…you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.”

Dunham and Felber married in September 2021. The “Famesick” author confirmed their wedding date with an Instagram post, which she captioned: “9*25*21 – that’s how she became the nanny…”
