Designer Bob Mackie, famed for swathing Cher and other celebs in envelope-pushing, glittery fashion confections, has died.

He was 87.

Mackie’s team announced the Tony Award-winning artist’s death Monday on social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today,” his team wrote on his social media accounts. “He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”

The post did not reveal a cause of death.

In addition to his costume work, which was celebrated with three Oscars, one Tony and nine Emmys, Mackie was an in-demand designer to the stars for decades, most notably pulling off Cher’s midriff-baring, showgirl-inspired look for the Academy Awards in 1986.

He recently made a cameo appearance as himself in the final season of “Hacks,” when Deborah Vance, portrayed by Jean Smart, calls the designer to track down a look he designed for Carol Burnett’s final look on the “Carol Burnett Show.”

Comments immediately followed from the legions of people who had worn his creations over the years.

“Sending condolences to all who loved him,” wrote actress Alyssa Milano. “He was one of the best that ever was. And I’m proud to have a collection of his dresses.”

Besides Cher, Mackie also collaborated with the likes of Carol Burnett, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Ann-Margret and Bette Midler, among dozens of other stars, according to People.
