Television Q&A: Will 'The Agency' come in from the cold for another season?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: I recently binge-watched “The Agency” on Paramount+ and was so impressed with not only how smartly the show is written and scripted but also the caliber of the cast, including Michael Fassebender, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere and more. I’m surprised as to how little I’ve heard about this show and the lack of advertising or press the show gets for being such a tremendous powerhouse of smart TV. Are there plans for Season 3 or 4?

A: Based on the French drama “The Bureau” (2015-20), the CIA drama has not gone unnoticed. There are dozens of reviews, and the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is generally favorable. But where the earlier series ran five seasons, as of early August there was no confirmation about “The Agency” continuing.

Q: Will there be a second season of “Dutton Ranch”? It is a very good follow-up to “Yellowstone.”

A: The drama starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser was picked up for a second season in late June. But there has been some off-camera drama. Ed Harris, who plays Everett McKinney on the show, told Variety that he expected to be one of the four main characters on the show but felt frustrated that his part was “underused and inconsequential.” He considered leaving the show but will be back in Season 2. And while series mastermind Taylor Sheridan was said to be unhappy with Harris’ comments, he will give the actor more screen time in the second season.

Q: Will there be more of “Hightown”?

A: The drama starring Monica Raymund (“Chicago Fire”) ended in 2024 after three seasons.

Q: Do you know the title of a movie from the late ‘40s/early ‘50s with this basic plot: U.S. Army intelligence wants false information given to the enemy by misinforming one of their own whom they feel will give up the information when interrogated. She falls in love with the man she chooses to send on the mission. Movie ends with a trial to find a traitor involved in the plot.

A: While some of the details don’t match perfectly, the closest I can find is a 1960 movie called “Circle of Deception,” with Bradford Dillman and Suzy Parker, and directed by Jack Lee. Not to be confused with a 2021 movie of the same name, the older movie is on YouTube.

Q: Why do Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and occasionally Jimmy Kimmel use foul language in their shows? The networks mute the sound but leave the words on the screen with certain letters blocked out but you know what they are.

A: This question comes up often about not only the late-night hosts but pretty much everything on TV. With broadcast programs the FCC has some oversight of language, which explains why words are muted or bleeped on the shows you mentioned, but across TV more broadly (including cable and streaming) you can hear a lot of uncensored talk. As for why, well, the culture has changed and raw language is more common across the board. For one example, look at how politicians talk in public today.
