Sound Advice: Feel the good vibrations with electric toothbrush
Published in Entertainment News
Q. I bought the TLOVII toothbrush you wrote about some time ago and can no longer find brush heads for it. I have been using a manual toothbrush since, and want to go back to an electric. Do you have any new toothbrushes to recommend, or even know where I can get some new TLOVII heads?
—D.G., Wexford, Pennsylvania
A. I first wrote about the TLOVII over five years ago. I still have not found compatible replacement heads and given its age, it's time to move on. You can read past toothbrush reviews on my website by searching under "toothbrush" at soundadvicenews.com. I have another one that deserves your consideration if you are looking for something special, the Usmile Y10 Pro Sonic Electric Toothbrush.
Usmile is considered a top-tier, premium brand overseas and they are increasing their presence in the U.S. The Y10 Pro toothbrush I tried is definitely my favorite sonic toothbrush so far, starting with the solid feel in the hand and smooth operation. The high resolution, high-quality screen has a deep, rich look to the display, though it is still small. On the opposite side of the toothbrush there are two long lines that are visible as you brush your teeth. If you apply too much pressure they turn red, so you can reduce pressure and protect your teeth, gums and comfort while still getting the best possible clean.
I am very familiar with sonic toothbrushes but the Y10 Pro brushes differently than any other sonic toothbrush I have experienced. In addition to the normal vibrating action there is an occasional warbling sound that tells me it is doing something different. This warbling action may be tied to the smart mode that adapts the brushing action to different tooth surfaces, another feature I have not seen before.
The Y10 Pro not only tells you where you missed, it provides feedback on cleanliness. I experienced this when I missed a morning brushing. That evening when I brushed I got the "Lot of plaque" message — ouch! I brushed again and was rewarded with a "Very clean" message — much better!
The Usmile Y10 Pro lists for $139.99 but can be had for much less. It is currently on sale for $87 on Amazon, and using the Usmile Father's Day sale coupon code DADDAY26 at checkout reduces the price $27 to $60. That's the same price as the first smart screen toothbrush I wrote about, and this one has superior feel, features and performance. Based on the user reviews, owners love it as well. The downside is less brush heads are included compared to other $60 packages I've written about. It includes two brush heads, and the others included eight brush heads. Unlike your TLOVII, the brush heads are readily available. If I was buying a toothbrush today I would opt for the superior quality of the Usmile Y10 Pro, and buy more brush heads in December. (Brush heads last three months, so they should last until then.)
Q. Can I use the ZVOX AV855 soundbar with my Avantree Bluetooth transmitter? I use the transmitter so I can watch TV with my Bluetooth headphones. She hears much better than I do, and I need a louder volume sometimes.
—N.C., San Ramon, California
A. Yes, you can use the ZVOX AV855 with your Bluetooth transmitter. First, connect the HDMI-ARC connection on your TV to the HDMI input on the soundbar, then plug the transmitter into the line output on the AV855. Please note the ZVOX AccuVoice feature that makes dialogue easier to understand may make the headphones superfluous, and help you find a volume level that satisfies you both.
