'Death Becomes Her' closing on Broadway next month

NEW YORK — “Death Becomes Her” ends its Broadway run on June 28.
“Bringing ‘Death Becomes Her’ to Broadway has been an incredible joy, and we are immensely proud of every artist, musician, crew member and individual who helped make this show what it is,” Universal Theatrical Group’s Head of Creative & Strategy Lowe Cunningham said in a statement distributed Monday. “Night after night, it has been a thrill to watch audiences come together to laugh, celebrate, and embrace the wildly entertaining spirit of this production.”
The musical comedy opened its Broadway run at Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 2024 after debuting in Chicago. It will continue as a touring production beginning Sept. 12 in Cleveland.
“Death Becomes Her” was nominated for a 2026 Best Musical Theater Grammy Award after winning a 2025 Tony Award for costume design.
Producers say the show will have completed more than 650 performances and sold 900,000 tickets when the final curtain falls.
Daily News theater critic Chris Jones praised the show for its ambition when it arrived on W. 46th Street.
“‘Death Becomes Her’ arrives on Broadway as a silly, campy, go-for-broke show that’s filled with hearty laughs (especially in the stronger Act One) and a pair of gutsy, zesty and highly skilled lead performances from Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard that land right where a good chunk of the Broadway-going public believe divas like these two should be landing,” he wrote in his 2024 review.
The play is based on the 1992 movie of the same name that starred Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, Goldie Hawn and Isabella Rossellini.
The film version of that unconventional supernatural comedy about beauty, youth and mortality won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
New York theater fans unable to see “Death Becomes Her” before its Broadway run concludes can see the show on tour when it visits Buffalo’s Shea Performing Arts Center in February.
