No, Ben Stiller's 'got it done' post was not about Trump shooting attempt

Lifelong New York Knicks fan Ben Stiller was inundated by angry comments on X after he shared a post, celebrating the team’s win Saturday night, a short time after a gunman tried to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner where President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet were among the featured guests.
Supporters of the president wrongly assumed that the “Tropic Thunder” star was commenting on the assassination attempt — when the 31-year-old gunman allegedly tried to rush into the ballroom at the Washington Hilton to target the president and other administration officials, as CNN reported.
Stiller had been posting on X all evening to root for his team as they took on the Atlanta Hawks in a crucial NBA playoff game, the Daily Mail reported. When the Knicks finally won 114-98, Stiller tweeted, “Got it done.”
Around that time, reports began to emerge that Trump, first lady Melania Trump and other members of his cabinet had been abruptly escorted from the Correspondents’ black-tie event, after Cole Tomas Allen opened fire one or two times outside the ballroom, as CNN and the Daily Beast reported. The teacher from Torrance, California, had been trying to rush past a security checkpoint armed with two firearms and multiple knives before he was taken into custody near a staircase leading to the ballroom, CNN also reported.
Meanwhile, Stiller’s “Got it done” comment soon was flooded with angry replies from people who wrongly assumed that he was somehow celebrating what unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace asked: “Got what done?”
Richard Grenell, a longtime diplomat and Trump’s former acting director of national intelligence, commented: “Wtf?”
Others escalated the criticism, according to to the Daily Beast. Cheryl Riley, a self-described “America First” candidate running for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, labeled Stiller a “vile human.”
Some people also accused Stiller of knowing “exactly what he was doing” when he posted his comment.
“I guess you think you’re clever and were giggling as you typed it knowing that you could present it one way as oh so innocently to the public, and then snicker behind the scenes with your (expletive) cohorts,” a self-described supporter of the MAGA and MAHA movements said.
Cynthia Hughes, the founder of the Patriot Freedom Project, which helps people arrested in the wake of the Jan. 6 protest, also wrote: “Little Ben knows exactly what he was doing when he posted this. He sits in his mansion with millions in the bank being a little whiny (expletive). Don’t let this (expletive) fool you, he knew exactly what he meant when he posted this. Your kind MISSED AGAIN.”
“This isn’t looking so cute & funny,” still another person said. “You’re a total disgrace. #benstiller #fail indoctrinated leftist hatred.”
But on the other side, Stiller got plenty of support from people who acknowledged that his post may have inadvertently been poorly timed but that Trump’s MAGA supporters also were being “morons” for jumping to conclusions.
“For God’s sake, calm down reactionaries,” one person said. “He was talking about the Knicks. … we have become a culture of children who (knee-jerk) react without any context. Take a breath people.”
“The majority of the people in these comments should not be allowed to reproduce or drive a vehicle or leave their houses without supervision,” another person said.
Meanwhile, X provided context to Stiller’s post by adding Community Notes to Mace’s reply: “He was rooting on the Knicks to win their game against the Atlanta Hawks. (They did, by the way.)”
For his part, Stiller tried to appear unfazed by the backlash, by posting a salute emoji th e following morning. But that post only stirred up more furor, with someone writing: “Ben, I am a big fan of your movies but I will never watch them again after your tweet today. I am so disappointed that you would tweet something so disgusting!”
