BALTIMORE — Gov. Wes Moore said Thursday that Maryland will offer expedited admissions assistance and an $800 credit to students affected by Howard University’s recent disenrollment of incoming students if they instead choose to enroll at a participating University System of Maryland institution this fall.

Under the initiative, Moore directed the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the University System of Maryland to “to establish a coordinated process” to help eligible students identify available academic programs, explore financial aid options and seek expedited late admissions review at participating campuses with available space.

Students who enroll at a participating University System of Maryland institution will receive an $800 credit to help offset nonrefundable enrollment and housing deposits previously paid to Howard University, according to the governor’s office.

“These students worked hard, earned admission to college, and were preparing to begin the next chapter of their lives,” Moore said in a statement. “Maryland is moving with urgency to give them a clear path forward — with hands-on support, expedited admissions assistance, and financial relief — so they can stay on track toward earning their degree.”

Howard University disenrolled more than 500 incoming first-year students last week, less than a month before the start of classes. Starting in March, the unenrolled students began receiving specific emails about enrollment and payment requirements and deadlines, the school previously said.

First-year orientation, known as Bison Week, is scheduled to begin Aug. 10. On Wednesday, interim President Wayne A. I. Frederick told The Associated Press that more than 200 students had since been reinstated.

Howard University did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Students seeking assistance are encouraged to contact the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Office of Student Financial Assistance for information about admissions and financial aid options.

“Here in Maryland, the University System of Maryland is set in lockstep with the Moore-Miller administration in support of students and ready to provide options for these students who need to continue pursuing higher education,” said Linda R. Gooden, chair of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

Maryland joins New York and D.C. in announcing assistance for students affected by the disenrollment.
