As a Christian, how do I begin a new journey amid all of the world's pitfalls and trouble?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I struggle to overcome my checkered past. As a Christian now, how do I begin a new journey, because this world is still the same with all of its pitfalls and trouble? – N.J.
A: We can’t change the past. Whatever has happened in life so far – both good and bad – cannot be altered, and the decisions that have made us what we are today are indelibly inscribed in our stories.
With God’s help, we can change the future. It doesn’t need to be a copy of the past, nor does God want it to be. God wants to put our feet on a new path – His path – that promises joy, peace, and purpose far beyond anything we can imagine.
This doesn’t just happen. An architect draws the plans for a new building – but it still has to be built. A composer writes a new piece of music – but it still has to be played. A chef creates a new recipe – but the ingredients still have to be assembled or cooked.
In the same way, God has given us a new path to walk by faith in Him. This is possible because God doesn’t leave us to do it alone. He wants to be with us every step of the way, guiding and helping us (and even correcting us when necessary), because He loves us and wants what is best for us. Only He knows the way forward.
When we stay close to the Lord Jesus, when we read of Him and learn from His Word, He provides guidance and protection along the journey. In the midst of the challenges we face through life and the temptations and sorrows we may face, life can be different than what we once knew. When we belong to Christ and live in obedience to Him, this journey is full of hope because it leads us to Heaven.\
