Daughter might not mature enough for street bike

By Amy Dickinson, Tribune Content Agency on

Absolutely -- do not leave kids with someone who drinks/refuses to take basic safety precautions. I'd also like to mention that when you're a grandparent (and older), it's much harder to keep track of a baby.

I adore my grands, but I'm 66!

Dear Grandma: I got a huge response to this question, all agreeing that this mother should never risk leaving her baby with a grandmother who drinks -- even if the grandmother agrees not to drink. Another response is below:

Dear Amy: I was that grandma. My son and wonderful daughter-in-law confronted me with respect and caring, causing me to admit what I already knew -- that I was drunk and unreliable.

Because they intervened, I have enjoyed the glories of five grandchildren for the last 37 years.

The son needs to step up and do his mom a big favor so she doesn't lose out. Under NO circumstances should the grandparents be allowed to babysit unsupervised at this point.

Dear Charlotte: This intervention saved your relationships, and possibly your life.
