Confucius says ... eating with awareness will help you lose weight

By Michael Roizen, M.D. on

Around 50% of you who go on a diet to lose weight regain whatever pounds you shed within two years. That may be from adopting an overly restrictive diet that you run from emotionally and physically when you stop following it. It may also happen because of metabolic changes that the diet or medication caused (like appetite suppression) that cannot be sustained or adopting lifestyle habits that you cannot stick with over time (under-eating, over-exercising).

You may do better in the long run -- and live a calmer, happier, longer life -- if you adopt the Japanese tradition of Hara Hachi Bu. Based on Confucius' concept of moderation, it recommends eating until you are 80% full -- satisfied but not stuffed. You do that by eating more slowly (don't bolt down lunch at your desk while you're working). This allows you to tune into the taste and texture of the food and become consciously grateful for your meal.

Research indicates that this helps you reduce your calorie count, improves your food choices and prevents long-term weight gain. Because it has a mindful quality, it can also reduce anxiety and bingeing. So, focus on your meals with no distractions (digital devices), and don't feel restricted, just appropriately satisfied.
