DETROIT — The number of reported cyclosporiasis cases in Michigan since June 22 increased to 10,386 on Thursday, but the number of new cases reported daily continued to decline from last week's peak.

Health officials continue to investigate the state's worst outbreak of the parasitic illness that usually causes frequent, watery and explosive diarrhea. As of Thursday, 193 people have reportedly been hospitalized, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The most recent state health department data shows that the number of cases of cyclosporiasis reported each day to the department has declined since hitting a peak on July 13, with 726 cases. Fewer than 500 new cases have been reported each day since July 23.

The state health department reported 309 more cases of cyclosporiasis on Thursday. Cases have been reported in 71 of Michigan's 83 counties as of Thursday, according to the state health department. The largest case totals are in Wayne County with 1,625 cases, Oakland County with 1,043 cases, Washtenaw County with 875 cases, and Ingham County with 810 cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and state public health officials have been investigating an outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico in nine states, including Michigan, according to the CDC and FDA. The other states include Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

The CDC said it's also investigating other outbreaks and illnesses of cyclosporiasis nationally that are unrelated to that outbreak.
