Ellen Degeneres mourns producer Matt Wright dead by 'unfathomable tragedy'
Published in Entertainment News
Ellen Degeneres tearfully remembered her former executive producer Matt Wright who died in an “unfathomably tragedy” while working in Los Angeles.
The comic posted video Monday confirming information previously posted in a fundraiser to help his husband, father, sister and niece in New York.
“Everyone loved him, I loved him,” she said. “It’s just shocking. It’s shocking.”
Degeneres revealed that she and Wright were working on a project at the time of his death, though she offered no details about that endeavor or the nature of the 52-year-old television veteran’s death.
A GoFundMe campaign posted Monday said Wright died Friday while he was on the West Coast working when “an unfathomable tragedy” of an unspecified nature occurred. They said that he and his husband were both laid off from their jobs over the summer and money to bring Wright home for a funeral was in short supply.
“If Matt has ever made you laugh, said an encouraging word right when you needed it, or ordered one too many appetizers for the enjoyment of the whole table, now is the time to repay the favor,” they wrote.
That fundraiser had nearly reached its $50,000 goal within hours.
Degeneres described her former producer as smart, kind and funny.
“Were going to miss him, he is and always will be the glue to our entire family at ‘The Ellen Show,'” she said struggling to gather herself. “I think this is going to be a really … I don’t know what I’m saying.”
Wright worked on “The Ellen Degeneres Show” for 16 years before it left the airwaves in 2022. He frequently appeared on segments that highlighted his bigger than life personality. The SUNY New Paltz graduate also worked on “The Drew Barrymore Show” and “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” according to his LinkedIn profile.
Fellow producer Andy Lassner posted a photo taken of him and Wright the night before his former colleague died.
“We are all in shock,” Lassner, who now works with Hudson, posted on Instagram. “He was a brilliant producer and an even better human being.”
He said Lassner flew his mother between Los Angeles and New York almost every weekend before she died. Wright’s friend Paolo Presta said that happened about 2 years ago.
“My heart went out to him because I knew that kind of grief all too well after losing my own mom,” Presta posted in a memorial thinking Wright for helping him through his own sadness.
The Los Angeles Police Department was unable to provide information about his death without more specific details about where it occurred.
