NEW YORK — Former “The Daily Show” writer Kevin Bleyer died in a rural Pennsylvania car crash. He was 54.

His “devastated, heartbroken, shattered” wife Nella Vera posted on Facebook that her husband was killed Sunday.

“Kevin was a private person and would probably hate that I’m posting this here. But it’s the most efficient way to let everyone know, so please feel free to share the news with others,” she wrote.

Vera said that there will soon be a private gathering for Bleyer, followed by a celebration of life in coming months.

Bleyer wrote for more than 1,000 episodes of “The Daily Show” between 2006 and 2012, according to IMDb. His work on that comedy program earned four Emmy Awards.

He previously wrote for comic Dennis Miller in 2004 and 2005 after penning 30 episodes of Bill Maher’s ABC show “Politically Incorrect.”

His only acting credit is for the 1985 film “Once in a Lifetime” starring Gene Hackman, Ann-Margaret, Ally Sheedy and Ellen Burstyn.

Bleyer also wrote jokes for President Barack Obama, according to his online bio.

Vera said that she met Bleyer in 2010 at the Public Theater. They quickly bonded over a shared love of political comedy and began dating in 2015. The pair married in June 2025.

“I was in awe of his intellect, dazzled by his wit, amazed by his fearlessness and spirit of adventure, besotted by his loving heart, and smitten by his beautiful blue eyes,” she wrote.

Vera said that her husband is survived by his father and brother, sister-in-law, and niece and nephew. His family told Variety the crash happened near his home in Millrift, Pennsylvania.

Fans and friends are asked to make a donation in his honor to the ASPCA or the Alzheimer’s Association New York City Chapter, where Bleyer did volunteer work.
