Sound Advice: Digital measuring tape follow-up and a high-end soundbar that's magnifique
Published in Entertainment News
Q. I was unable to find the exact digital measuring tape that you recommended (Fanttik A10 Pro) on Amazon. Do you have a link?
—H.C., Pittsburgh
A. For those who missed it, the Fanttik A10 Pro is a digital laser tape measure that shows the measurement on the high-resolution display when you pull out the tape. It also uses a laser to measure distances up to 165 feet, as well as to measure and calculate area and volume. It calculates angles when you tilt it, works as a digital bubble level and you can save the readings on the device. It's one of the coolest and most useful gadgets I have ever tested, and I love that I no longer have to squint to see tiny marks on a measuring tape.
Unfortunately the A10 Pro temporarily disappeared from Amazon soon after the column started running, even though it is a current model. I was able to verify this because I sent my sister a link when she told me she wanted to buy a bunch of A10 Pros as gifts. When I received your email I went back to the text message history, clicked the link and got an error page. The listing glitch has been resolved and the product is back on Amazon. The code LASERTOOL is working as well, and it reduces the Fanttik A10 Pro from $89.99 to $49.99. The code appears to be Amazon-exclusive as I tried the code on the manufacturer website, and it did not work there.
Q. You mentioned the Devialet Dione soundbar a few months back, how did your testing go? I'm looking for a high-end soundbar, and I love French products!
—D.K., Cranberry, Pennsylvania
A. The $2,399 Devialet Dione is the best soundbar I have ever tried. Manufactured by ultra-high-end French manufacturer Devialet, the Dione is a single-piece 5.1.2 surround system that integrates the subwoofer, surround speakers and Atmos speakers into the soundbar. The center channel is enclosed in a sphere placed in the center, and this sphere rotates to accommodate shelf placement or wall mounting. Inside the Dione, Devialet's proprietary amplification modules power high-tech, ultra-precise speakers that revealed nuance, subtleties of tone, clarity and definition I have never heard from a soundbar in my home listening room. (Focal's $3,600 Mu-so Hekla sounded spectacular at shows and is the most logical competitor, but I have not tested one at home yet. It also cannot be wall mounted, and must be placed on a large, flat surface.) The Dione can play quite loudly, and the dialogue reproduction is the best I have experienced. It is a great system for listening to music, too.
I loved the looks, sound and premium feel of the Dione, and given the performance and Devialet pedigree it ranks as a good high-end value at $2,399. (This is very affordable for Devialet, given they have $48,000 amplifiers in the lineup.) My reference system combines a soundbar with a wireless subwoofer and wireless surround speakers. Given the Dione's impressive bass output, I did not miss the external subwoofer at all. But as much as I loved the gorgeous, engaging sound of the Dione, it does not provide the same level of immersion as wireless surround speakers placed around the room. For those who have no plans of using wireless surround speakers with their soundbar (and this is most people) it is a nonissue, and if you have the budget the Dione belongs on your shopping list. I would love to see Devialet offer a soundbar matching surround speakers one day, and hopefully it is something they have in the works. devialet.com
