“Call My Agent! The Movie” may or may not make much sense to anyone not already an aficionado of the French comedy series “Call My Agent!” (currently streaming on Netflix, with the movie now also on the streamer). I couldn’t say, as I gobbled up every episode of the series ages ago, delighted by its screwballish depiction of a Paris talent agency in which all the agents seem perpetually at each other’s throats — and in which real-life movie stars frequently swing by to make fun of themselves in irresistible cameos. (There’s a big one in the movie, and I won’t say a word, other than to say it’s perfect.) The series concluded after four seasons with the ASK agency breaking up — a logical endpoint, but clearly I wasn’t the only person who missed this very high-strung bunch.

So here we are, five years after the events of the series finale, and former agent Andréa Martel (Camille Cottin) is now a director, just days from starting production on her first feature film. However, the “Call My Agent!” brand is crisis, and things quickly start to go terribly wrong, so much so that the ever-beleaguered Andréa must join forces with ebullient former ASK assistant Noémie (Laure Calamy), who’s now, appropriately, a reality TV producer. Other ASK veterans turn up — among them Thibault de Montalembert’s smooth Mathias, Nicolas Maury’s endlessly chatty Hervé and Liliane Rovère’s cigarette-voiced Arlette — as Andréa and Noémie must deal with troubles including casting drama, catastrophic weather, unexpected romantic entanglements, a Moldavian insurance company and a very large wild boar.

Other than its two-hour runtime, there’s not much to distinguish the movie from an episode of the show, but that’s probably as it should be: When a beloved series becomes a movie, there’s no reason, or desire, to reinvent the wheel. If you loved “Call My Agent!,” you’ll very much enjoy listening to Andréa’s rapid-fire barking of all her dialogue (Cottin has an uncanny way of never seeming to draw breath), watching a wide-eyed Noémie say the wrong thing over and over to a person she’s trying to impress, and learning that when an actor has a “secret project,” it means he’s dealing with either rehab or #MeToo. And if you’re new to all this delightfully French show-business shrieking … well, four seasons are sitting right there on Netflix, just waiting for you.
