Craig T. Nelson has paid an emotional tribute to his longtime Coach co-star Shelley Fabares following her death at 82 - remembering the actress as an "extraordinary woman" who became a foundational part of his life.

The 82-year-old actor starred opposite Shelley for nine seasons of the ABC sports sitcom, playing college football coach Hayden Fox while she portrayed his partner and eventual wife, television news anchor Christine Armstrong.

Shelley died in Los Angeles on Saturday (22.08.26) after a brief illness, her family confirmed, bringing to a close a career that also encompassed The Donna Reed Show, One Day at a Time, three films with Elvis Presley and the chart-topping single Johnny Angel.

Craig has now told Entertainment Weekly: "Shelley was a great and grand lady… just a rock. I will miss her. She was a foundational part of my life during the run of Coach."

He continued: "(She was) just an extraordinary woman. She always had a smile. She was welcoming in the midst of chaos and always someone I could go to for advice and counsel, not only myself but others as well. I'll remember you with love, Shelley Fabares."

Craig and Shelley spent almost a decade playing one of the central couples in Coach, which ran on ABC from 1989 until 1997.

The comedy followed Hayden as he attempted to balance his obsession with football and his work coaching the fictional Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles with his personal life and relationship with Christine.

The role earned Craig the Primetime Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series in 1992 after nominations in the same category in 1990 and 1991.

Shelley received two Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for playing Christine.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 1990 about their characters' relationship, Shelley said: "The show is about the coach and the relationships in his life. There's been more of a focus this year on Hayden's and Christine's relationship.

"Obviously, I enjoy that. I like how they have our relationship developing. I think Hayden and Christine are at an interesting point in their relationship where they are moving forward, but both are frightened."

Coach represented a major second act in a television career that had made Shelley famous decades earlier.

She became one of American television's best-known young stars playing Mary Stone, the daughter of Donna Reed's character, in The Donna Reed Show.

Shelley appeared in 192 episodes of the ABC sitcom and subsequently maintained a long career across television, film and music.

Her recording of Johnny Angel reached No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962.

She also appeared opposite Elvis in three films - Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake - and later had a recurring role as Francine Webster in One Day at a Time.

Shelley was also known for the 1971 television film Brian's Song, in which she played Joy Piccolo, wife of Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo.

She was married to MASH* actor Mike Farrell, who played Captain B.J. Hunnicutt in the long-running television series.

The couple had been married for more than four decades at the time of her death.

Shelley had also been an advocate for Alzheimer's awareness after her mother developed the disease and had previously undergone a liver transplant after suffering serious liver problems.

Her family confirmed her death in a statement issued over the weekend.

They said: "To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort."

They described her as a "devoted wife" and "loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her".

The family added: "She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. For millions, Shelley was a beloved actress whose work became part of the fabric of American television and film."

They said: "We will miss her deeply - not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives."

Shelley is survived by Mike and her two stepchildren.
