NYC to hold lottery for 2,100 free Broadway tickets for city teenagers

NEW YORK — Mayor Zohran Mamdani Thursday announced a lottery for 2,100 free tickets for New York City high schoolers to seven different Broadway shows.
“This is justice for the theater kids who have watched City Hall roll out lotteries for major sporting events all summer long,” Mamdani said from the stage at the New York City Center performing arts center in Midtown.
Students who enter the lottery will also automatically receive a free two-month membership to the Theater Development Fund, which provides access to discounted tickets and free admission to cultural centers across the city, the mayor said — although students, as well as people under 30 and teachers and school staff, are eligible for a free membership to the organization already.
Students in the five boroughs have until Monday, Aug. 17, to enter the lottery. Winners will be announced Sept. 1.
Mamdani has made a practice of sweepstakes-style giveaways in his first months as mayor, including giveaways for World Cup tickets, the Knicks championship ceremony at City Hall and prime viewing of the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks, among others.
