Jamie Lee Curtis has clarified her comments after saying working on New Girl was "awful".

The 67-year-old star had a recurring role as Joan Day, the mother of Zooey Deschanel's Jess, on the hit comedy series, but she recently admitted she "hated" the experience".

Speaking at NBCUniversal's Summer Backlot Experience while promoting her upcoming sitcom Newlyweds, she said: "I did a single camera, which, I mean -- great show, New Girl, very funny -- it's a good show, but doing it is just like doing a movie.

"You know, you've got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It's silent, and it's awful. For me, awful.

"Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun."

Jamie's comments sparked some backlash, and she has now responded on social media, insisting there are "bigger issues facing Americans and the world at large", including "natural disasters and unnatural behaviors of despots".

She wrote on Instagram: "I was there gushing about a multi camera sitcom that I co-created along with Gail Lerner about a late in life love and people finding each other and marrying on a whim.

"It stars, Tea Leoni and Tim Daly as the couple and we are having so much fun and the audiences are loving it and I was comparing how much I liked doing the show live in front of a studio audience, which is almost like doing a play where you get immediate feedback."

She reiterated that on a sitcom like New Girl, "there's absolutely no feedback", which is a struggle when you're "trying to do comedy".

She continued: "I said it wasn't my favorite experience although the show itself is fantastic and the team that made it are talented and that Zooey Deschanel is an absolute gem of a human."

Jamie also pointed out she got to work with her real life friend, the late Rob Reiner, on the show.

Asking people to "move on to WAY more important things", she added: "I got to play with my friend, Rob Reiner, as exes and that was sweet and lovely."

Late last year, Rob, 78, and his wife Michele Reiner, 70, were killed in their home.

In April, Jamie explained that her late friends were the godparents of her daughter Annie Guest, 39, and that their deaths in December 2025 coincided with Annie's birthday.

During an appearance on IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, she said: "Rob and Michelle are her godparents."

She added: "My beautiful daughter who loved (the Reiners) - as we all did - managed to be able to metabolise her grief and sadness, as we all have had to do."

Jamie also described the events surrounding Annie giving birth to her first child the week after the deaths, saying it represented "life on life's harshest terms and and life on life's most beautiful, perfect terms".

Speaking previously to Variety, Jamie said: "Our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them. We have lost great friends. Please give us time to grieve."
