New Girl creator Liz Meriwether has weighed in on the possibility of rebooting the beloved TV show, admitting it "would be exciting" to see it return.

The comedy series ran from 2012 to 2018, and starred Zooey Deschanel in the lead role as teacher Jessica Day.

Despite the fact it came to an end eight years ago, New Girl remains a favourite among TV viewers and is amounting new fans on a daily basis - with the continued popularity sparking rumours that a reboot could be on the horizon.

Liz was asked about the speculation during an interview on the Bingeworthy podcast, to which she replied: "It would be exciting, but I really would have to have my head around why we were doing it.

"There are just moments where you're like, I grew up with these people. They make me laugh in a way that nobody makes me laugh."

Liz added that her answer is probably not going to be enough to stop New Girl stars Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris from passing a decision about a potential reboot over to her.

She laughed: "They're always like, 'Well, if Liz wants to do the reunion, we will'. And I'm like, 'You guys, that's not how the world works!'"

Liz's remarks about the possibility of revisiting Jess' story comes after Zooey said she'd be "very happy" to star in a reboot.

However, Max Greenfield - who played the affable Winston Schmidt in the show - had some reservations when asked about the idea during an interview with E! News back in October 2022.

He said: "I thought Lisa Kudrow said something really insightful when they were doing the Friends reunion. The writers worked really hard on wrapping it all up in a way that was hopefully satisfying to the audience and satisfying to these characters. If you go back into it, it means you got to undo that, and that to me is argument enough to really question whether to go back or not."

Max added he would ultimately let Liz decide whether or not "there was some way back in".

He concluded: "It would definitely be something I would be open to, but it's tough."
